For almost the entire past decade, watches were largely a men's topic: bigger cases, more complications, waiting lists. In 2026, the conversation has moved onto the jewellery pages. Cases have become smaller, cocktail watches are back, and the women's watch is no longer simply a scaled-down men's watch.
1. The watch becomes jewellery again
The loudest trend of the year is the cocktail watch: small, decorative and worn more for the look than for reading the time. Harper's Bazaar and Who What Wear both opened their 2026 trend lists with it, and the major houses provided proof throughout the year – Chanel with secret watches hidden beneath diamond bows, Van Cleef & Arpels with a revival of its 1949 Ludo Secret, and Piaget with a dial set into a substantial gold cuff.
Cocktail watches are like jewellery – daintier, more delicate and designed to be worn as a statement piece.
Pia Mance, Heaven Mayhem, speaking to Who What WearYou can also see the shift in the way people talk about buying a watch. Dimepiece founder Brynn Wallner told Marie Claire that a watch is “often an investment financially, yes – but above all an emotional investment”. That is the language of jewellery, not gadgets.
2. Small is the new statement
At Watches and Wonders 2026, the big theme was smaller. Cases that had previously measured 40–43 mm and above shrank to 36–39 mm – even IWC's Big Pilot, a watch whose entire identity was built around its size, was reduced from 46 to 42 mm. For women, Parmigiani's Tonda PF is now available in sizes from 28 to 34 mm.
The shift is as psychological as it is physical. For years, a small watch was seen as a compromise. In 2026, it signals confidence.
3. Gold – and gold that isn't solid gold
Gold is the colour of the year, by a wide margin. Pinterest recorded a 225% increase in searches for “'80s luxury” and a 50% increase for “gold cuff”, summarising the mood as jewellery becoming bigger, bolder and “more golden”.
But the metal has never been so expensive. Metals Focus expects global gold jewellery consumption in 2026 to be more than one third below its 2023 level – down 17% in India and 30% in China in the first half of the year alone – while shoppers increasingly turn to gold-filled and gold-plated pieces instead. The look is gaining ground, while solid gold is becoming increasingly difficult to justify. That is also why two-tone steel and gold is back after fifteen years.
4. Vintage shapes on the modern wrist
Nothing launched in 2026 looked as though it had been designed in 2026. The shapes in demand are those of the Tank from 1917, the Constellation from 1952, a Reverso or a Piaget Sixtie – and Watches and Wonders was one long parade of revivals. Pinterest recorded a 45% increase in searches for “heirloom jewelry”.
What is surprising is who is buying. Together with Fratello, Chrono24 found that demand for dress watches among Gen Z has risen by 44% since 2018, compared with 29% across all other age groups – and that Cartier's share of Gen Z purchases has grown from 1.7% to 6.8% over seven years.
5. The bracelet makes the difference
As the case gets smaller, the bracelet becomes the watch. Harper's Bazaar identified comfort-focused bracelet construction as a trend in its own right this year – beads-of-rice links, flexible Milanese mesh and lugs redesigned for slimmer wrists. It is also what makes the stacking look work: a small watch plus two or three bracelets, with widths and finishes deliberately mixed rather than perfectly matched.
The Dottilove Edit
That is exactly the approach we took when designing our first watch collection: small, golden, shaped by vintage references and made to be worn every day rather than saved for special occasions. Five shapes, each available in warm vacuum-coated gold and cool polished steel.
The cases measure between 28.5 and 35.5 mm, placing the collection right at the heart of the small-watch trend rather than following behind it. Every model features sapphire crystal and a Japanese Miyota quartz movement, together with a solid stainless-steel bracelet and folding clasp.
And on the question of gold: vacuum-coated gold on stainless steel is the answer for a year in which the look is golden and the metal costs what it costs.
